Mr. Angelo is about 84 years old now. He still comes to the restaurant almost every night. It's a magical place. Gary and I have spent many wonderful hours there with friends and family through the years celebrating and sharing some great times!
One never orders from the menu at Tony Angelo's. You give the door host a polite "thank you" as he hands you the menu, place it on the table and keep it closed. When the waiter gets there just ask him (or her) what's on the "feed-me" menu tonight. They will describe the most wonderful little dishes and you'll be starving before they're finished. Order a bottle of wine, sit back and get prepared to be entertained for the next 3 hours! Gary and I always get the "upscale feed- me" because it involves fewer but incredibly special dishes such as soft shelled crab, stuffed calamari, lobster cup and horseradish shrimp.
Anna and Marco seemed to like our choice for the evening. We had been a little nervous about bringing them there just because they were Italian. We knew Tony Angelo's was authentic southern cuisine but ya know- when it comes to Italian food everyone is a little different. They all want what mama used to make. Well it turns out that Mr. Angelo cooks a lot like Anna and Marco's mammas! We were so happy that we were able to celebrate Anna's birthday with exceptional panache thanks to the amazing staff and food!
By the end of the evening we had agreed not to allow our chance meeting come to an end. Gary and I were incredibly delighted when Marco and Anna asked us to visit their home. We drove back to our home in Houston and almost immediately made airline reservations! After a full summer of house guests and vacations, construction and painting, tomorrow morning we finally get to leave for Detroit. Anna and Marco have agreed to let us come cook and enjoy the bounty of their garden. Anna will be teaching us how they make their prosciutto, bake bread and S cookies. We're hoping to help in the garden as well, harvesting and canning! The Lord has richly blessed us with our new friends. I can't wait to get to know them even better!!
